Early morning flight from Addis Ababa to Jimma, then drive to Chebera Churchura National Park through coffee-growing regions and rural landscapes. Arrive at the park entrance and transfer to simple bush camp inside the park. Afternoon orientation walk near camp to acclimate to the environment. Chebera Churchura is one of Ethiopia's least-visited national parks, offering a true wilderness experience. Evening briefing about park ecology, safety procedures, and wildlife behavior. Listen to night sounds of the forest from your camp.
Early start for elephant tracking - Chebera Churchura has one of Ethiopia's largest elephant populations, estimated at 400-600 individuals. Follow fresh tracks with experienced guides, learning to read signs of elephant presence. The forest-savannah mosaic provides ideal elephant habitat. Observe elephant behavior from safe distances if encountered. Afternoon explore different habitats within the park, from riverine forest to open grassland. Look for other wildlife including buffalo, bushbuck, warthog, and numerous primates. Return to camp for evening around campfire, sharing stories of the day's sightings.
Hike to the impressive Churchura Waterfall, the park's namesake, through beautiful forest scenery. The waterfall cascades over rocks into a pool below - opportunity for refreshing swim in natural setting. The area around the waterfall is excellent for birdwatching - over 200 bird species recorded in the park including several regional endemics. Afternoon focused birdwatching session with local guide knowledgeable about avian species. Visit a nearby river for possible hippo sightings. Evening optional night walk (with guide) to look for nocturnal species.
Final morning activity based on group interests: additional elephant tracking, specific bird species search, or forest walk focusing on plants and smaller wildlife. Break camp and drive back to Jimma for return flight to Addis Ababa. Alternatively, for those continuing to southern destinations, begin overland journey to next location. Arrive in Addis Ababa with memories of a true wilderness experience in one of Ethiopia's most remote and pristine national parks.
