Welcome to Axum, the cradle of Ethiopian civilization and once the heart of one of Africa's greatest ancient empires. After arriving at Axum Airport, transfer to your hotel in the center of this historic town, which served as the capital of the Aksumite Kingdom from approximately 100-940 AD. In the late afternoon, visit the Northern Stelae Field, observing the Great Stele (33m tall) that fell during construction, and learn about the sophisticated engineering techniques used to erect these monumental granite obelisks. The evening begins with an orientation walk through Axum's historic center, followed by a traditional welcome dinner featuring authentic Tigrayan cuisine.
Explore the legendary ruins of Queen of Sheba's Palace, dating back approximately 3,000 years, and examine the sophisticated drainage systems, stone masonry, and construction techniques that characterize Aksumite architecture. Study the multilingual Ezana Stone, inscribed in Sabaean, Ge'ez, and Greek, which provides crucial insights into ancient Ethiopian history and the kingdom's conversion to Christianity. Visit the excellent Archaeological Museum housing artifacts from the Aksumite period, including pottery, coins, and royal inscriptions. Continue to the Tombs of King Kaleb and Gebre Meskel, exploring the underground chambers that once held royal treasures.
Visit the sacred St. Mary of Zion Church complex, the supposed resting place of the Ark of the Covenant according to Ethiopian Orthodox tradition. Learn about the immense religious significance of this site, which draws pilgrims from across Ethiopia. See the Chapel of the Ark (closed to women and most visitors) and explore the Cathedral of Tsion with its beautiful religious artwork, ancient manuscripts, and historical artifacts. In the late afternoon, witness or attend a traditional prayer service, experiencing the deep spirituality that permeates this holy city.
Embark on a day trip to Yeha (approximately 1 hour drive) to visit Ethiopia's oldest standing structure - the 5th century BC Temple of the Moon, built by the Sabaean civilization that preceded the Aksumite Kingdom. Explore the archaeological site and adjacent museum containing Sabaean inscriptions, artifacts, and evidence of pre-Aksumite civilization that provides context for understanding Ethiopia's ancient history. Return to Axum for a farewell lunch featuring local specialties before your departure transfer to the airport.
